Local Pastor Says He's Victim in Sex Abuse Case

NEW: A spokesman for the Church of God's international offices in Cleveland, Tennessee, says Cook has been placed on administrative leave.

A high-profile pastor from Kanawha County says he's one of the sexual assault victims of another pastor -- and he's written a letter to the public.

Pastor Mike Lewis of the New Life Center in Cedar Grove sent a letter to local media outlets Tuesday night. In the letter, he says he was one of the victims of Sandy Martin Cook more than ten years ago when he was a teenager.

Cook was and still is the pastor at the Shrewsbury Church of God.

Cook was arrested by West Virginia State Police on Monday. He's charged with 3 counts of sexual abuse by a person of trust, and 44 counts of sexual assault in the 3rd degree.

During his arraignment in Kanawha County magistrate court, Cook said, "I'm scared to death."

According to the criminal complaint, the alleged crimes happened around 1994 -- and so far, three alleged victims have come forward in the case. All were between 13-16 years old at the time.

One victim stated he developed a close relationship with Cook -- and that Cook told him it was "normal for father figures to perform/receive sexual acts on each other and that the performing of such acts was part of growing up."

Another victim told police Cook performed sexual acts on him during two sleepovers at Cook's house, according to the criminal complaint. That victim told his parents, who reported the matter to the church; but the matter was later withdrawn during a meeting at church in Chesapeake "for conflicting reasons" and was not reported to police at the time.

A trooper verified the victim's statement about the meeting and the fact that the issue was withdrawn.

Investigators say the suspect's actions are similar in each case.

"Each of the 3 victims live separate lives and one lives in another state," as stated in the criminal complaint. "However, each of their allegations provide details of the intricacies of Cook's conduct that are exactly the same."

Police say they first learned of this case when one of the alleged victims came forward on August 3. According to investigators, the first person led them to Mike Lewis, and he led to the third victim in the case.

The criminal complaint states that a majority of the alleged crimes happened either at Cook's home in Belle, or in one of Cook's cars.

Cook is currently out of jail on $150,000 bond. WSAZ has also learned that he works full-time as the head at the the cardiac cath lab at Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC) Memorial Hospital.

State Police say more victims may be out there. They urge you to come forward if you have any more information in this case. Trooper M.J. Napier is handling the investigation: (304) 558-7778.

Here is a letter Pastor Mike Lewis wrote to the public after he says he was sexually abused by Sandy Cook more than ten years ago:

To Whom It May Concern,

Four weeks ago my world was rocked when State Police investigators contacted me concerning allegations of sexual abuse by a local Church of God pastor. My name was given to investigators by another victim who had suspicions that I may have suffered the same abuse that he did over a decade ago. For thirteen years I have hidden this secret in the deepest part of my being, never to let it out. Over these past years I have shared this secret with no one. Not my wife, parents, family, or leaders. I assumed that my abuse had been limited to me alone and that no one else was suffering what I suffered. My assumptions were wrong.

I have since learned that multiple victims have come forward seeking justice for what was taken from them by a person who was suppose to protect and guide. I now know that I was not alone and I have a right & responsibility to speak up. I would have taken this secret to my grave, but when Investigators approached me and asked the question… ‘Are you also a victim’, I could not lie. The fact is, I am a victim of sexual abuse, suffered at the hands of this so called pastor who is in serious need of help.

My abuse started around the age of thirteen and continued for around four years. I was too afraid to speak up or speak out. I was told by this so called leader that these things must happen to me in order for God to use my life to make a difference. As a young boy with no church background and not many possessions, I was suckered into this web of lies and deceit. As I matured I realized that his excuses for abuses were all trumped up lies and that my relationship with God was between me and God alone, and did not require a third person.

The realization of the fact that this persons sexual abuses were brought to the attention of other local Church of God pastors, as well as the State Overseer of the Church of God, and that it was swept under a rug and not reported to the authorities is simply appalling. To think that the abuse I suffered and the victims that came after me should not have been, had the Church of God denomination followed the law and reported this first allegation in 1994. They failed to follow the law and I stand here today, with many other victims asking why.

I give praise to God because unlike many victims, my abuse did not stop me from reaching my goals. God has called me to His work and I am thankful that God brought me through the difficulties I weathered as a young teen. My life is not messed up. I have the greatest wife & family on the planet, the greatest church family and the greatest circle of friends anyone could ask for, and it is all because I stayed focused on Jesus. The abuse that I suffered was simply a trick of enemy to try and stop the plans that God has for my life – and he failed, and failed miserably!

I was not the first victim to come forward in this investigation, and I will not be the last. My sincere prayers are with the other victims and their families today. I know what you are going through and I encourage you to speak up if you haven’t already. The way I view this situation is simple – the hard part is over, meaning that the abuse is behind us. He can never touch us again, and it is our responsibility to make sure that he can never touch anyone else again either.

Star: You don't know Mike Lewis very well, he wanted to take Pastor Sandy Cooks church. He chose to live with Sandy and his grandmother. He had a home to live in. He has two younger brother and they are GREAT MEN. You had no choice where you lived. BIG DIFFERENCE

Today I spoke personally with pastor mike .I have never met him.I have read alot about this particular case on line.I am a survivor as wel .I was abused by a stepfather that was a military drill sergent I was 14 when he finally got investigated.my own mother knew but would ot stop him she had been told by me herself several times.Only in the last few months have i learned about the case involving me and a sister i now have legal documents from the military showing including a recent one from the pentagon that our allegations were founded,yet he walked back then good soldier 2 days later he was aloud to retire.I am trying to seek justice in this the state he commited these offenses was kentucky and there is no statue of limitations I did not have a parent that protected me I could not defend myself i did not know about a victims rights i was never offered counciling except one time one hour then it was hush hush i believe pastor mike theres lot of us out there just like pastor mike

I would like to commend Pastor Mike Lewis and all of the others for speaking out..I have been involoved in church my entire life and a daughter of a retired pastor..SCOG had a board of deacons and when this was brought to there attention years ago and nothing was done..YES when we all stand before the judgement seat of Christ I am fearful that many will be turned away...depart from me ye workers of anniquity...As for this man..mr COOK...If he was really a God called Pastor..he has committed the unpardonable sin BLASPHEMY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT...you cannot tell me that he did not hear the Lord telling him to STOP!!!!!!He was not a christian at this point...no this is not judgemental...for those to know good and to do it not...this IS A SIN...and sin WILL NOT enter into heaven...We all NEED TO PRAY FOR MIKE LEWIS AND ALL THE VICTIMS AND that mr COOK WILL ADMIT WHAT HE HAS DONE PUBLICALLY...BEFORE MAN AND GOD!!!!BY THE WAY...THE NEW LIFE CENTER IS A WONDERFUL CHURCH..BLESS YOU & YOUR WORK!

  • Posted By: Jim: Question for all are you happy with the health care system the US has and the prices you are charged for services.I have a 90/10 plan where I work with a $300 annual deductible and a $20 co-pay for office visits which is a pretty good deal.Last year they added a well care benefit which covers yearly physicals,pap smears,mammograms and prostrate exams.Here is the part that I can not understand last year without the well care benefit my insurance was billed $614 which they paid for my wifes pap smear and mammogram this year the same procedure was only billed at $148 because it is all they would allow so where did the other $466 go last year.It really doesn't matter to me because I didnt have to pay but the idea that my children do not have insurance really bugs me thinking that the amount that gets wasted and over charged could be used to cover people that are not covered and can not get treatment that is needed without money up front that they may not have.Let me know what you think

This is something that should apply to all citizens of Belle. I noticed a big job down on Gardner Ave. being done at the old Maytag place and I think they should have to have a work permit too. It's discriminatory if they don't. Let's get it together Town of Belle.

You have to know the heartbreak of seeing your child suffer so many things through no fault of his own to understand. Sometimes you are the only advocate they have and it is still not enough. They are made fun of, but bless their hearts, they don't understand it and smile through it all. They take what life throws at them and go right on loving everyone. If I did not fight for him, he would not be here. I guess it becomes a habit of fighting for them and sometimes the pain gets so great we jump on a fly. But I would not trade him for a million healthy children. Again, I am sorry. I am having a tough time seeing him suffer and am overly sensitive right now. I will take a break from the yell. Sometimes, Keith you are insensitive, but what would the yell be without you? We would have nothing to yell about. Just kidding. ;)

What do you want, one a day, one per week, etc...when things get really fired up, the Yell is a great feature and we could have a roaring debate on here, which I think is great, good for you guys too, but it would have to be regularly updated and sometimes I know that is apparently difficult. Since there seems to be an overwhelming liberal to conservative ratio on here, and you run about 10 liberal posts to every conservative, lets even it out. Scroll down the page-we have Labels, Morons, Carveon, Anon, Jam, Anon, Jim, Roane Co, etc... for example, I have sent in three posts asking a simple question, why did the National Downs Syndrome Society publish a letter to Rahm Emmanuel about his comments; why did a father of a child with Downs take offense; why did Sarah Palin, mother of a child with Downs, take offense??? Answers, PLEASE????????????????????

It is painful, I have told you that and still you continue. My child is one of the sunniest parts of my life and I have NEVER associated that word to him and I resent those who do. And they are not a "Down's child". They are children who happen to have Down Syndrome. I have agreed with you on most topics that are real issues. But I have basically ignored your "people" attacks. I was wrong to do so because it eventually hit me. I do not care who spoke out about the remark making it refer to Down Syndrome, it is wrong. And bad politics. The difference is, Cheney's intent was not to take a group of people who could not defend themselves, (Downs Syndrome, "R" folks) disparage them, and use them to insult folks who can, as was quite ably demonstrated by the various reactions of WV. Emmanuel's true feelings about defenseless people came out as an insult toward his liberal pals. Granted, he apologized, but so did Cheney. Speaking of, I read where a father of a Downs Syndrome child was offended by Emmanuel's comments, he, as a father, apparently applied Rahm's words towards all who face challenges; contacted Sarah Palin, mother of a Downs child, who publicly excoriated Rahm; the National Downs Syndrome Society published a public letter to Emmanuel, (Why?) voicing their offense to his comments; what I don't understand is, why is anybody upset at anyone besides Rahm Emmanuel in this entire episode?

Supplies, equipment, services, and people are losing their jobs. The people in charge need to be held accountable and maybe even prosecuted. The Board of Education members, the former Superintendent, the County Accounting person, and anyone else who authorized spending funds WITHOUT MAKING SURE the money was there before spending the money. Does anyone see the irony here? Liberals are the ones in America who make racist comments, pick on the helpless, etc...and apparently Obama and Co. don't think much of YOU liberals either.

However, neither had anything to do with Down Syndrome and I am very offended by the comparison. If S.Palin made a link to that comment with her child, she either has not come to terms with her child's uniqueness or using him as a political pawn and it is sad either way. It is my understanding the word used ended with "ed", not an "S" so was not name calling, however ugly it was. To link it to Down Syndrome is wrong! A child with Down Syndrome may be slower in academics than their peers, but may excel in other areas, and always excel in the area of love. Mine can do many things his older "normal" sibling cannot do. We can learn a lot from these special children. I recommend you get to know some. But please leave them out of this political fray! This kind of politics needs to stop. Keep with the REAL issues that are destroying our country and stop with the mud slinging. Words will not bring our country down. Foolishness will.

(Isn't it pathetic in America, we can't say some words? Wimpy enough for you?) Google "Rahm Emmanuel apology" to find out what he said. The comments were made last August and Sarah Palin called him on his incredible rudeness and forced an apology. What's up? Do you guys protect this bunch now too? IF it is an oversight, and you have simply missed my THREE posts, apologies in advance. Get with it, it is an incredible wimp who censors comments.

I say ban them from a couple of games, or do like they did at the football games, and move them to the upper deck. Dont let them close to the players or coaches. But, we all know WSAZ is jumping all over this because of the"rivalry" with good old MU. When the Mountaineers came to H-town a couple of years ago, The so called "F-Bomb was plastered all up and down 6th and 7th Ave. on white sheets with Big Green Letters. So, just remember, there are students and fans with bad language and bad behavior at all universities. This is not an isolated incident that happens only in Morgantown. I am sad that I went to watch my favorite college team play and have been dubbed a bad fan with what happened out of a few students. Be fair WSAZ!!

First off. The cars do not just accelerate on their own. Stop being dumb. Just as Toyota claimed that the accelerator MAY or may not return to the idle position when you take your foot off of the pedal. But the way people like Vanessa that clearly made up her story just to get on the news. All I ask is that people please get the facts before making your final assumptions. I own a Toyota just as well and will continue to own one until the day I die, because every car has its small problem and I have found that Toyota fixes those problems and hides nothing. After all is investigated, it would not surprise me if all the problems boil down to an issue with computer chips. In 1984, I had new a 6 cyl. Ford Mustang. One day after starting the car, letting it warm up and shifting from park to drive, the car took off! My foot was not on the gas! I had to put both feet and all my weight on the brake to control it. The tires were spinning and smoking right there in the driveway! This lasted for a minute or so, then the RPM's decreased and I was able to shift the car back to park and promptly called the dealership. They fixed it & said it was a bad computer chip. Once fixed, I never had any more problems, but that was certainly scary and I had the tire marks to prove it. This again, was in 1984. 2010 is probably no different. I wish they still made cars that the average Joe could work on - sans computer chips. I hope they solve the Toyota mystery issue soon.

Its happening in our security, discriminatory laws, religion, oil, money, import/export, borders etc. We Americans can’t do anything without p/c being part of the problem. It stems from other countries. The black/white issue doesn’t even compare to what China and the radical muslims are gonna put us through. Its coming if we don’t pull together as Americans, pull together as one. If we keep letting the govt. create the divide (and there is a division) we are in trouble. The govt. keeps crying racism exists still today. Of course it does when illegal immigrants and other countries religions cry discrimination. It exists within govt. itself. Remember the candidates tried to appeal to specific races. Geez that was all over the news.

Illegal immigrants are making the American black & white the minority. Which by the way there is talk of giving illegal immigrants amnesty so as to create a progressive long term election bid(worldnetdaily). Islam is becoming the major religion. Our military soldiers are being criminalized(navy seals,cia). The enemy gets their day in our court. Americans are made to pay a price for the radical muslim actions. I could go on. So you two boneheads is this current enough? Or is your head where it doesn't belong. You keep it there long enough it will be to late for anyone to say I old ya so. You will be there before you know it therefore making it a mute point. I see so many people here making the case and the rebuttal is always it seems,in other words paranoia. Paranoia can be described as a mental illness or a high state of awareness. Ignorance and fear mean exactly that.
  • Posted By: John: I am a WV fan and I just watched the WV. and Pitt basketball game and whoever throw something and hit the coach from Pitt should be banned from all games at WV. All that person has done is brought disgrace on the team and the university by doing something like this. Espn will have a field day with what happened. No wonder the basketball team and football team is not televised more with the way the student section acts. Either grow up or go home.
  • Posted By: Sophie: I would like to see the media give an overall update on the situation in Haiti. Every report I've read seems to concentrate on logistic problems getting in food & supplies. Even after seeing the pictures and making an effort to aquaint myself with the island topography, I do not understand why there is no better control. It would be good if someone could tell the American public who have been generous exactly what progress has been made and what progress we will see in the coming weeks & months.
  • Posted By: Big Earl: Hello good coal miner people of WV did you all hear the Chunky Monkey Rain Forrest Crunch Bunch from the WWF is at it again and no you hippies settle down Rick Flair is not going to bust a chair over your dopey heads these is the World Wildlife bunch this time some greenies at some college wrote up a report claiming that all the wonderful rain forests was going to bake up and blow away and the land turn into grass well boohoo seems like them people what live down there would be happy getting more grass knowing there is no better place south of the Panama Canal to get a good steak than Argantina I say let the cattle graze if you hippies want your rain forest go out in your dope patch and spray yourself with a garden hose.
