HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Troubled teens in Cabell County may start getting a better sense of the real world starting this fall.
Monday night Huntington City Council unanimously approved the creation of a teen court that will serve as an alternative disciplinary program for first-time, non-violent teen offenders.
In these trials, youth would serve as attorneys, bailiffs, the jury, everything except the judge.
If found guilty, kids could face such punishments as community service and research papers.
Weed and Seed Program Coordinator Tim White has been pushing for a teen court for two years.
"A lot of times when we talk to kids, they feel like they get away with a lot of things, shoplifting, graffiti, issues within the community and the school,” White said. “This is an opportunity for them to be held accountable by their peers for their actions and attitude."
The plan right now is to start by October and hold a teen court every Thursday night.

I think people are missing the point here. This is a good idea. As long as we make sure that the youth counsel are acting on what is best than this will open their eyes to the legal system, which all young adults (and older adults) need. As for the youth committing the crimes, the crimes are minor offences. As long as they are minor offences than maybe the postive peer pressure will allow the offenders to see that their negative actions are not acceptable by those whose oppinion they vaulue and not the adults who "just don't understand". We have all said those lines growing up but when someone our own age would stand up than we would listen. I work in a juvenile treatment center and I think that peer accountability means more than what another generation says. As long as we stand behind the youth counsel and help them in times of need than this should work. If what we are doing now is not working should we not try something else or just go down with the sinking ship.
Hey Jimbo Insco, since you voted for this, where is the money coming from to pay for it? An occupancy tax and sales tax? great. No waste here, move along.
I know of a kid that gets in trouble all the time he was sent away for awhile and when he got out,the judge told him if he messes up one more time it will be bootcamp for him well he got kicked out of school and still gets in trouble and his parents let him get by with anything, and its mostly the parents fault that he is like this.He will always get in trouble because he knows he can get by with it...
