BLAINE, Ky. (WSAZ) -- A young girl died when the ATV she was riding on hit a tree.

Sheriff's deputies in Lawrence County, Kentucky say the accident happened about 7:00 p.m. Saturday on the Left Fork of Laurel Creek. That's near the town of Blaine.

13-year-old Hailey Shelton was driving the ATV when it went off the gravel road and hit a tree. A medical helicopter was set up for Shelton, but she died on the way to it.

A 15-year-old girl was also on the ATV. She was taken to the hospital with a broken arm and a head injury.

The accident is under investigation but deputies say it appears the girls lost control of the ATV.

First of all I would like to say that my prayers are with this family, who is my neighbor. I can't believe that anyone (Anonymous or not) could get on here and post negative comments @ a time like this. Haley will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her and she was a great friend to my children. It's easy for everyone to blame and say what should have been done...well I say spend all that time and energy praying for this family. Only God knows why things happen the way they do...

Continued from last post from Aunt Linda. The funeral had to be moved because the funeral home couldn't accomodate the crowd that showed up. They said there was record attendance. Our community came together and could not have been better to us. We are eternally grateful and will never be able to repay the kindness we have been shown. Haley was loving and kind, laughing all the time. Her best friend, Jackie, was seriously injured, but thank God is going to be OK. She was released from the hospital yesterday. Sadly, children are killed in accidents every day. Swimming accidents, texting or talking on the phone when driving, or others we just can't explain. Give your kids an extra hug and tell them how much you love them. Our family prays that none of you ever have to suffer the loss of a precious child. Ironically, it is Haley herself whose words have turned out to be the most comforting. In any situation, Haley always had a habit of saying, "It'll be alright."

Last weekend, Fathers' Day weekend, my brothers and some of their closest friends took their families camping. They work very hard all the time, and they wanted to spend some quality time with thier children. They all took their 4-wheelers. The children wore helments and had adult supervision as always. They even brought extra helments to make sure no one rode without one. Riding was one of Haley's most favorite things to do. Haley had an accident and hit a tree, breaking her neck, killing her within minutes. Our family is devastated, but Haley was a Christian and we know God showed her mercy by not letting her suffer. God decides when we are born and when we die. There has never been a child more loved and better cared for than Haley. My nephew held her in his arms comforting her until the EMT people arrived. It was his 13th birthday. Out or space - post continued.
