HAZARD, Ky. (WSAZ) -- You may have heard her music and chances are you know her sister. On Thursday Stella Parton, Dolly Parton's sister, was in eastern Kentucky.

Parton was in Hazard to make it clear she supports Kentucky coal and its numerous benefits for more than just Kentucky.

“We never forget the mountains that we came from or the people we belong to. They are our people,” Parton said.

Her first stop was at Pine Branch Coal, where she thanked miners for their work and posed for pictures in front of 5 foot tall coal seams.

“50 percent of our energy is from coal. And I'm one who doesn't want to turn off my blow dryer or curling iron,” Parton said.

Her visit was to show her feelings for the need of mining coal, but those who brought her here also say it's very important to show the significance of what coal does for economic development.

“We're just trying to get the word out that we need more mountaintop removal. Without mountaintop we would have nothing in eastern Kentucky,” Haven King said.

The other side of the argument is that mountaintop removal may be harming the environment but Parton says without coal mining, we would quite literally be living in the dark ages.

“When you think about our stoves and refrigerators, all the modern conveniences powered by coal, how many want to give up the icebox,” Parton said.

Her visit comes after some controversial comments Ashley Judd recently made against mountaintop removal mining during a speech at the National Press club in Washington.

Judd called mountaintop removal “environmental genocide.” She says the process is “the state-sanctioned, federal government supported, coal industry operated, rape of Appalachia.”

Judd has long been an outspoken critic of the mountain top removal.

"I'd gladly give up comforts to have a longer life and to ensure a future for my grandchildren."...really Anonymous? How long do you think your Grandchildren would be able to endure the cold of Winter and the heat of Summer; without the electricity provided by coal to keep them comfortable? You selfish, silly twit! You even further confirm your ignorance by refering to "cheap energy" as a bad thing. I actually like being able to afford to pay my electricity bill. But, then again, I'm probably paying for your's too.

Kudos to Stella Parton,we need coal for our everyday life here in eastern Ky,power for our homes, etc how can someone want to put a stop to mining coal when that is jobs lost, and here we do not have that many jobs to begin with, Ashley Judd needs to give from her pocketbook and not her mouth to any coal miner,Hollywood will not take care of us.Im glad we have coal to keep warm, and to stay cool..(ac) lights would go out in Hollywood if not for coal,so think about what you all says about, coal fuel.people wake up,smell the coffee.More idiots then fools,
