CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A local radio ad is battling the BP backlash.

The massive oil spill in the Gulf has sent off a storm of frustration and protests throughout the country, but BP retailers here at home say boycotting BP will only hurt the little guys.

A new advertisement has hit the airwaves saying, "We are all concerned about the situation in the Gulf, but local stations, local BP stations are asking for your support. Please, don't punish innocent people who have no control over the situation."

The ad goes on to say: "Did you know that most BP stations are locally owned and operated? These stations employ your friends and neighbors."

Janet Vineyard with the West Virginia Oil Marketers and Grocers Association says if you boycott BP it will only hurt local businesses and local business owners.

"Their tie to BP is supply of product and a credit card base," Vineyard says. "When you do not buy from BP on a local basis, you're not hurting the oil company. You're hurting a local business. BP doesn't own any station in the state of West Virginia. Those are all owned by local businesses."

Vineyard says BP retailers sign into a contract with the company to carry the BP name and its gas.

Now she says that name is hurting some of the local BP retailers.

The radio ad was paid for and provided to the local retailers by BP to help fight the bad publicity.

Take time and watch those gas trucks.....they will drop at an Exxon and then they'll drop at Kroger and BP's alike. It's pretty much the same gas anywhere you go.

I have used BP for a long time. I will continue to do so. I always look for a BP station, no matter where I am. Beats supporting terrorists. The spill is unfortunate. The loss of marine life is heartbreaking. But the loss of human lives to terrorists is much worse. Support BP and you are helping to clean up the beaches, along with helping your local businesses.

OIL HATERS? How about INCOMPETENCE HATERS? BP KNEW this well was unsafe and still continued to drill after workers complained about the LARGE possibility of an explosion! 11 men died due to their incompetence. I guess if a coal mine blew up and people protested that, we would be coal haters instead of CONCERNED CITIZENS HEY? And actually the oil in the Gulf is very little compared to what we fight wars over and people die over in the Mid East. Get a grip. This is about a tragedy that will effect marine life and ways of life for century's. You speak to us like we don't know the importance and use of oil-- lol-- duh really didn't know that. POINT IS IF YOU'RE GOINA DRILL, DRILL RESPONSIBLY!!
