ASHLAND, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Working at the same place for 45 years is impressive in its own right, but one Kentucky Electric Steel employee made it through his entire career without ever missing a day of work or being late.
Terry Runyon says there were days he didn’t feel well, but he felt it was important not to miss.
"It was the character my dad instilled in me,” Runyon said. “You got a job, you have a responsibility, you need to be there, and he done a good job, because I felt the urge and the need. I made a commitment with my company. I needed to be there."
Now, Terry Runyon is finally about to enjoy some much-earned time off.
Friday night family and friends held a retirement celebration in his honor.
Runyon's children say the work ethic they picked up from their dad made an enormous difference.
"Dad always pushed me to get good grades in school,” his daughter Gail Cantrell said. “He always inspired me. When I graduated high school, I graduated valedictorian. That was my achievement in honor of him because he always told me I could do it."
"God gave me the strength, God was the one that done it for me," Runyon said.
He says the country wouldn't have some of the problems it has today if younger generations shared the same values.
"Work ethic is not what it was in our generation in the time I was brought up,” Runyon said. “We need more dedication from our younger people."
Now that he's reached a well deserved retirement, Runyon says he's proud he can look back at a job well done.
"I've given a hundred percent. I’ve never ever not given a hundred percent,” he said.
Now that he's retired, Runyon says he's going to spend a lot of time working on his garden.
The lifelong South Point resident says he and his wife Nancy will also do some traveling.
