HURRICANE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- For years, people have been relying on radios to get their information, especially when disaster strikes.

However, not everyone who helps to transmit crucial information is a professional. There are a lot of amateurs out there, and a handful of them gathered in Hurricane Saturday.

They were participating in Field Day, which helps refine radio skills that are needed during emergencies.

From 2 p.m. Saturday to 2 p.m. Sunday, amateur radio operators are competing with others across the nation to see who can reach the most radio stations.

According to Robert Hanson, they're using one of the most reliable forms of technology available today.

"That's the only backbone we have left for communications today," Robert Hanson said. "Everything has gone digital, with the computers and the iPhones and so forth, this is one basic form of communication that will survive through any type of catastrophe."
