HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Local farmers are planting seeds of growth in their gardens and in their community.

Saturday was the first day of business for the Central City Farmer's Market in Huntington. For the farmers that sell there, it's just as important to cultivate customers -- as it is vegetables.

"Its nice to see the same people again," Farmer Tim Harper said. "When you see them again you know you're doing something right."

Jessica Baise is only 12-years-old, but she's already growing her customer base.

"It's important because if you're a new farmer you want to have a couple people to help you get started on selling more and more so you can make more money," Baise said.

But more than who's selling, it's what's for sale that keeps Central City Market shoppers coming back for more.

"You sell what you grow, and the consumers get product from the people who raised it," Harper said. "They don't get stuff from Florida or North Carolina, they get stuff that actually was raised here."

You could call farmer's markets "green" markets, as well, because aside from being wholly organic -- they bring a whole lot of green back to the community.

The Federal Government is sprinkling their own version of miracle grow on local farmer's gardens this year. Friday, United States Labor Secretary Hilda Solis announced a $78 million dollar grant geared towards gardens.

Some of that money will hit close to home. In Kentucky, more than $1.2 million will go to Bowling Green, in Ohio, the same amount will go to Liberty Center. In West Virginia, $200,000 will go to farmers in Martinsburg.

That money will help farmers with job training, health care and even child care.

The Central City Farmer's Market will be open throughout Summer and Fall, Mondays through Saturdays.
