SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Rolling out with sport and style, members of the South Charleston Police Department want to prove they have the best fleet around.

They've entered a fierce national competition looking for the best of the best when it comes to police cruisers.

"You give a guy a car that looks like that they take pride in it," Assistant Chief Robert Houck said. "They want to keep it clean, they want to keep it shiny and it's a bad day when they ding it."

South Charleston cruisers have a black and off-white paint job, similar to the classic police car look, but with some serious upgrades.

"When you think police car you think of black and white," Houck said. "All the way back to the Andy Griffith, Adam 12 and the old TV shows, that's what you thought about when you saw a police car."

The new cruisers are Dodge Chargers with hemi engines, providing lots of power, speed and torque.

The overall graphic design is clean and sporty. While the cars may look menacing, they are practical too -- each installed with the latest radar and mobile data terminals or MDTs, which are basically a laptop that allows officers to do reports that once had to be done at the station.

The competition is put on by "Law and Order", a national police magazine, and broken down into categories.

"It probably took me two hours to go through all of them," Houck said. "Looking at everyone's entries for this people's choice award, I think ours is the cream of the crop."

The cruisers from South Charleston are up against about 70 other departments, all of which they hope to speed past.

Judging will take place in the next few weeks.

Are you all really so oblivious to the fact that non-civil service employees work at PD's. It may come as a shock to you but just because you work at a PD doesn't mean you are an officer. Also they have a city garage that helps them detail their cars and I'm sure spouses who love to help as much as they can as well. I don't get why people have to fuss about every little non important thing. I'm glad they take pride in their ride. I'm glad they won't break down if I need help. I am also VERY glad that they are visible to the public so we can spot them and no where to go for help. Deputys and states are getting harder and harder to spot everyday. If I need help I wanna be able to see u!! And to the one that asked if this was really news....... Would u rather there have been a report of a murder in sc?? Would that have made u feel more safe and secure? I don't think so.

Have you notice that when S.C. police has someone pulled over it takes the whole force to do so. It's a joke to see them to be at a car wreck they have all of the cars there and the road blocked so they can be seen. What a bunch.
