SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- From walkers to bikers, the track at Oakes Field is a popular spot to get fit. Now, it's attracting a wilder crowd.

Sarah Powers and her sister-in-law Katie take their kids to the track on a regular basis to get in a two mile walk. Saturday, they got an extra workout and a bit of a scare.

"Two deer jumped out. We thought they would just run off and everything would be fine. Instead, they started running towards us," Sarah said.

That's when Sarah grabbed her son and Katie pulled her 11-month-old baby out of it's stroller.

"We just ran up the bleachers trying to get away and they kept following us," Katie said.

At first, the women said the deer couldn't figure out how to get over the fence. Sarah even had time to snap two pictures of them on her phone. Soon, the deer found the break in the fence and started heading towards them in the bleachers.

The women went on the run again and left the field, heading to Sarah's sister house a block away.

"I always thought that deer were calm and gentle and would run away. Never would I have thought they would chase you down," said Sarah. "I cannot wrap my mind around it. It's absolutely crazy that's the only way you can put it."

Other people visiting the track Saturday said they'd never seen deer there before.

After their close encounter, Sarah and Katie said they heard that another frequent walker at the track had a similar scary experience with a deer.

They plan to take a break from visiting the park and are also hoping to report the incident to the Division of Natural Resources.

There were no babies around at the time and you would be a little freaked out to if you were walking and all of a sudden deer were chasing you.. There was no fuss made it was just an interesting story. I am a hunter as a woman and do get out and enjoy nature. And yes we did feel thratened simply because are babies were there. There is no fuss it was just unusal just for your info.

This is what we get for moving into the wildlifes turf. The wildlife is running out of habitat, and has nowhere to run. If you dont want to deal with the wildlife, stop building homes in their habitat. This is becomming a problem everywhere in our country. Im so sick of hearing people complain about the wildlife comming into their property, etc. when its our problem to begin with...
