HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- With the heat expected to continue the next few days, it’s important to take measures to keep yourself safe in the sun and your kids safe when you travel.

Heat illnesses can be extremely dangerous. Symptoms include a lack of sweating, flushed skin, rapid breathing, a racing heartbeat, strong pulse, headache, hallucinations or seizure, muscle cramps and weakness.

Leaving a child or pet in the car this time of year can be fatal to them. On hot summer days, 75 percent of the temperature increase occurs within the first five minutes. The temperature inside a car can top 120 degrees on a sunny day when the outside temperature is in the high 80s.

Drinking plenty of fluids, wearing sunscreen and staying out of the sun during its strongest rays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. are ways to help protect yourself and loved ones from the heat. Also keep plenty of water for your pets and provide them a shady place to rest – preferably inside.
