HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Firefighters had to contend with smoke and flames along with temperatures in the 90's to bring a West Huntington fire under control Thursday evening. One firefighter injured his leg battling the fire. The fire was reported just after 6:00 p.m.

Shawn Windsor spotted the smoke and called 9-1-1 and then when neighbors told him there may be people and animals inside he went in to make sure everyone was out. No one was home but Windsor found two dogs in an apartment.

"I found the dogs hidden underneath of a sheet in a bedroom next to the bed and I turned on the light and tried to get the dogs out." he said.

"One of them bit me so picked up the whole cage and carried it to the door and let them out. The little dog ran back in the house so I went all the way to the back of the house to get the dog and when I came outside that's when I saw the whole house on fire."

Smoke from the fire could be seen for several blocks and while firefighters were able to quickly contain the fire to the second floor, they were still taking care of hot spots more than an hour later. Fire crews had to block Washington Avenue to run hoses from the hydrant across the street to the fire. No word yet on what may have started the fire.

Hey D from going to the scene and the best of being able to tell these 2 fires were next door to each other the fire in the house on 1 day and the big eagle building the next you have to look at the pictures and then actually see the real scene from all ways of looks that is what it looks like to me.

Me again, only if shots are not up to date, if not he will have to be quarantined. To the gentleman who saved the dogs, as a dog owner all I can say is THANK YOU!

Um, R, Sue's comment was not "good the firefighter was hurt" It was more along "Good for the civilian that saved he dogs". I see nothing bad in her post at all. Here's to hoping the firefighter injured is okay.
