CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The idea of a second new school on Charleston's West Side is news Scott Castleman has been waiting decades for.
"I remember 20 years ago when I was at J.E. Robins there was a discussion of a new school," Castleman said. "This is how long people have been talking about a new school."
He supports plans to build the new school at Cato Park. At a special Kanawha County Board of Education Meeting Friday, Castleman was in the minority.
While everyone who voiced their opinions support building another school on the West Side, not everyone thinks Cato Park is the right location.
"The Cato Park site, there's only one way in and one way out," Robin Godfrey said. "In case of an emergency, I think that poses a risk to the children. We just think there's a much better site, better for the students, safer for the students and cheaper for the taxpayers."
Godfrey and his wife also worry about the effect that the school will have on the environment. The couples says the area is prone to flooding and worry that if the hillside is tampered with, more water issues will surface.
The school board went into executive session Friday to discuss the new West Side school.
Board President Pete Thaw says the board made a promise to the community to build two new schools on the West Side in different locations.
"This board is intent on keeping their word to the people of the West Side and building the second school in the hills section of the West Side," Thaw said.
The School Building Authority awarded the county $8.8 million to build the new school. Thaw says the board is working with its lawyer to iron out the details of obtaining the land at Cato Park and looking into other possible places to build the school.
