CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- An Ohio computer executive has been convicted for misleading investigators about a scheme to misuse public funds intended to bring broadband Internet service to rural areas of West Virginia and Ohio.

A federal jury convicted 41-year-old James Larry Hymer on Friday on charges of misleading a government auditor checking up on a $3.3 million U.S. Department of Agriculture loan issued to Sequelle Communications Alliance Inc. in 2002 and of lying to investigators in 2007.

The Sequelle project, designed to bring broadband Internet access to rural counties in West Virginia and southern Ohio, fell apart before completion.

Three others have pleaded guilty to the misappropriation of more than $2.4 million for the project.

A sentencing date for Hymer has not been set.
