Camp Celebrates 50 Years
Those with disabilities don't always have the luxury of just being kids.

MASON COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The summer break allows kids to take some time off school and just enjoy their childhood.

However, those with disabilities don't always have the luxury of just being kids.

For half a century, one camp has focused on helping those kids forget about their disabilities and just enjoy a week of fun.

This past week the group enjoyed things most kids take for granted at Camp Sunshine in Southside in Mason County.

They swam, played games, and had slumber parties.

“A lot of places don't have things like this for kids,” camp volunteer Kelly Mullens said. “It's really nice for them to be here to have it."

It's a service volunteers say is immensely rewarding.

"It makes me feel wonderful,” Mullens said. “It lights up my day. Every day I'm here I get to spend with them, it makes me so happy."

Friday they celebrated the camp's 50th anniversary.

this is a great camp for kids with spical needs.

This is truly a wonderful experience for these children and adults. I spoke with a few of the first time campers and they want to come back next year. We had people come from all over the area and one camper came in from Washington D.C. just to enjoy in the fun. These children are no different than any other kids, they just need love and want to have fun. God Bless.
