PROCTORVILLE, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Summer is synonymous with county fairs, and Saturday one got started in Lawrence County, Ohio.

Loretta Freeman has been coming to the fair since she was a little girl.

"I was a 4-H'er myself, and now I have boys in 4-H," she said.

She says over the last few years, the fairgrounds have been in less than fair condition.

"I've seen the deterioration of the grounds over the years, and now they're improving," she said.

Since last year, the grounds have gotten a 55-thousand dollar upgrade.

"We've done a lot of work and raised a lot of extra money," Lawrence County Fair President Freddie Hayes said.

Various improvements have been made to numerous buildings on the grounds. Walls have been painted and floors have been redone, and walking paths have been paved.

Hayes says the fair setting hasn't looked this sharp in about 15 years.

"It was needed awfully badly,” he said. “It was in poor shape.”

The upgrades have fair patrons fairly euphoric.

"I'm so glad because I was afraid the fairgrounds were gonna be moved to a different location," Freeman said.

President Hayes says all the improvements should lead to a higher turnout at this year's fair, which means extra cash for more improvements in the future.

"It keeps building and building,” Hayes said. “Once you start improving, it keeps going."

Hayes says they were able to raise the additional money by getting extra sponsorships.

The fair runs through next Saturday.

I have been to the fair since i was two weeks old and all you hear anymore is bad things about it, well all i can say is you must not know what the fair is really about cause if you did you wouldn't be talking crap about the fair. The fair doesn't need to move, you just need to quit being a grump butt. and i do agree about the whole derby thing. i think they would get more derby people in there if they wouldn't let the five mile boys in. i would like to become a fair board member...

Nobody would be bored with the demolition derby if it wasnt for all of the buddies who inspect the cars and allow cheating to take place everyone knows that the orange 5 mile boys team all has built cars illegally with solid car welding ane using street signs to sturdy the car more. Get real officials and make it more fair then maybe you wouldnt be boo'd and people would enjoy it again

It helps when your daddy owns half of lawrence county there FREDDY JR. Why not have your dad donate some of the land he cant even remember owning to relocate the fair grounds. Your fair amusement company is pretty lame too. Everybody has gotten pretty bored with the Redneck entertainment of DEMOLITION DERBY and Tractor Pulls! Im surprised St Marys Hospital hasnt complained from all the loud drag engines used to compete. Those vehicles keep everybody awake till midnight, except of course those who live out in the country. 55k? Freddy must have found that in his dads spare change bowl.
