UPDATE: 8/2/10 @ 10:45 a.m.
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- More than 41,000 people attended the Greenbrier Classic during the championship round on Sunday.

That was the largest crowd of the week long festivities.

The practice round started on Monday. Here is a breakdown of the attendance numbers.

Monday - 9,100
Tuesday - 13,200
Wednesday - 17,200
Thursday - 26,200
Friday - 30,000+
Saturday - 41,000
Sunday - 41,800

A spokesperson with The Greenbrier tells WSAZ.com the resort won't know the economic impact for another month or so. The resort hired a firm to conduct a study to get actual numbers on how much money the tournament brought in to the area.

Lynn Swann says the classic was a success, but of course the resort is always looking at ways to make things better. She expects some things will be tweaked before the 2011 tournament.

The next big thing for the Greenbrier Resort is a BBQ Mastery Weekend. Ray Lampe, also known at Dr. BBQ, will conduct a three day hands-on cooking school on August 22 through the 25.

The Greenbrier is also gearing up for a big Labor Day weekend. The weekend will feature live musical performances from the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra and "The Music of Abba."

UPDATE 7/29/10 @ 11:55 a.m.
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. (AP) -- The Greenbrier Classic is under way in White Sulphur Springs.

The PGA tournament is drawing thousands of golf fans to The Greenbrier resort and the Old White course.

Predictions are that scores could go low with six short par 4s and soft course conditions.

Jim Furyk, who's fifth in the FedEx Cup standings, has an afternoon tee time. With a win he could leap past Ernie Els into the top spot with four weeks remaining until the playoffs.

Lee Janzen, Jeff Quinney, Charles Howell the Third, Jeff Overton and Mathew Goggin are among the early golfers having solid rounds. Each are at 4 under par with most of the field yet to tee off.

UPDATE 7/28/10 @ 10:30 p.m.
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- While there are usually around 2,300 people in White Sulphur Springs, you could multiply that by at least 10 this week.

That's because of The Greenbrier Classic, the first PGA golf event to be played in West Virginia.

Thousands of people are pouring into the Mountain State for the tournament, which officially begins on Thursday.

We will have crews at the tournament for live coverage throughout our Thursday newscasts.

UPDATE 7/26/10 @ 8 p.m.
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- West Virginia's first PGA tournament is generating tremendous excitement at the fabled resort The Greenbrier.

You could even say The Greenbrier has hit a hole in one. A year ago, it was on the brink of bankruptcy.

Now it's on the worldwide stage, hosting the states first ever professional golf tournament at the PGA level.

The Greenbrier Classic teed off on Monday.

ORIGINAL STORY 7/10/10
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - This month's inaugural Greenbrier Classic professional golf event is creating a run on housing in southeastern West Virginia.

With an estimated 2,100 volunteers expected to lend a hand at the Greenbrier County event, hotel space in the region is booked.

That means people who want to watch the professional tournament are looking at renting houses and other venues for the July 26 to Aug. 1 event at The Greenbrier.

Greenbrier County Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Kara Dense says local realtors are trying to accommodate the demand.

One real estate advertisement lists several properties ranging from $1,000 for the week for a two-bedroom camper to $10,000 for a three-bedroom house in White Sulphur Springs.

This tournament was awesome! Really gives WV a great name. I'm sure 41,000 others think the same. Only complaints are: closer parking, food/beverage prices. All in all, a well coordinated event! I hope Mr. Justice makes some changes to the course (Old White) to make it more challenging. Way too many low scores!
