CROSS LANES, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- An elderly woman trying to decide if she could still drive ended up hitting a house.

The accident happened around 12:30 Wednesday afternoon along Lee Lane in Cross Lanes.

Police say the woman accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake. That caused her to hit a mailbox and a nearby house.

There wasn't much damage done to the house.

The woman did suffer some very minor injuries.

First of all, this is a neighbor. Her husband died recently and she took the car not 3 houses up the street. Second, Lee Lane is a private one lane road. None of the neighborhood kids were out and she didn't injure anyone but herself. She could have gone out onto Doc Bailey, and instead went up into the neighborhood and the cul de sac to test her ability. It as a very wise thing to do. I feel badly for her and for the neighbor whose home was damaged, but grateful that in her attempt to see if she could drive, she did it in this manner. She is now aware of her ability and will not be driving again. If you know an elderly neighbor, please check on them and make sure they have what they need. Ask if they need family called and offer to drive them with you when you go to the store. That will help prevent this from happening again.

I am just wondering, if she wanted to know if she could still drive, how long has it been since she last drove? Could her family not have taken her some place remote and away from people or objects? That is if she had even asked them for help. If she wanted to be independent, she may not have even told them.
