One brain surgery to remove a cancerous tumor can be more than devastating, enduring four brain operations, and multiple tumors it just might cause a 12-year-old boy and his family to question their faith, but then, there's Nick, and his mom and dad and a thousand of their closest friends.
Nick Nishan is a young man who many say defines the word inspiration in the quietest, humblest but maybe strongest way possible.
On the outside, Nick looks and acts like any other sport loving pre-teen, but on the inside, his parents say there are physical and spiritual powers at work that go beyond human comprehension.
Nick’s mother, Tammy Nishan, says she waited too long to nutritionally upgrade her son Nick's daily diet since every day is precious. Every day since doctor operated on 7-year-old Nick's malignant brain tumor, followed by intense radiation, chemotherapy and recovery.
“For four years, everything was normal, he played sports, went to school, then a routine eye appt found a swelling,” Tammy said.
In August 2006, doctors removed two more cancerous brain tumors, then another tumor found and another successful operation just last week.
“He asked me am I going to die? I said we all were, but, he's not just along for the ride on this, his faith is real and it carries all of us,” Nick’s father, Tim Nischan, said.
“It's just something spiritual that gets me through,” Nick said.
But Nick's family says more than the medical treatments, they believe in the healing powers of community prayer. As they left for Nick’s last operation there was a big surprise as a thousand people line the streets of Grayson to send Nick and his family of with prayers and best wishes.
“I was shocked, I just couldn't believe it,” Nick said.
“This family has done so much for others before all this, they are truly loved,” family friend Melissa Brooks said.
“It gave me faith in this town and a faith that god would turn tragedy into triumph,” Tammy said.
The Nishchan's set up a colorful vibrant prayer positive web site to keep the community abreast of Nick's condition. Friends in return hosted basketball tournaments, 5k walks and a Nickapalooza concert to help with medical expenses. What Nick's strength and faith did was give an entire community hope for the challenges in all their own lives.
“Never give up Nick is now in full remission,” family friend Bob Genung said.
He's scheduled for regular MRI monitoring. In the mean time, he's a homebound student, with teachers coming in from East Carter Middle School.
The Grayson First Church of Christ, everybody's getting on the nutritional whole food bandwagon with an “Iron Chef Night" for Nick.
