UPDATE 7/17/10 @ 8 a.m..
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Police dispatchers say the runaway bull near Huntington was captured Friday night. Officers shot the bull because it was getting close to homes. The owner said the bull was an aggressive animal.
Normally, you'd think that jumping from a moving vehicle on the interstate isn't really a good idea, unless it's the last chance to save your own life.
That's the unique story of a temperamental bull that refused to be kept down.
Bull riding was the special attraction Friday night at the Lawrence County Fair.
While those bulls bucked off their riders, one bull across the river managed to buck himself out of a trailer on I-64.
"The bull jumped out of the back of the truck on the interstate off the back of a cattle truck, and he ran up in the woods," the bull’s owner Willis Mills said.
The 3-year-old bull's escape was a last resort of sorts. He was on his way to become part of a summer picnic.
"This ones supposed to be extremely aggressive,” Corporal Brian Lucas with the Huntington Police Department said. “That was the reason the owner was taking it to the slaughterhouse."
In just a few weeks it'll be the first Football Friday Night of the season and the Huntington Highlanders will take the field at Bob Sang Stadium, but on this Friday it was a much less conventional scene as Huntington police attempted to take down the escaped bull.
It was believed to be in the woods nearby the school’s athletic fields not far from the interstate.
"We've been told not to approach it unless we have significant firepower to deal with it,” Lucas said. “It's a large animal. We can't do anything other than terminate it."
The World Changers group made of students from 11 different states has spent the past week working on home repairs in West Virginia.
They've been staying at Huntington High School, and they found the fugitive bull to be a fascinating development.
"We're all about flexibility and just adjusting how we need to, whatever the needs are in the community, so whatever happens. This is just one of those things,” University of Florida senior Jessica Best said. “A bull escapes and you deal with it as you need to."
As of 11 p.m. Friday night crews were still out looking for the bull.
Huntington police say they have night vision goggles that should make him easier to spot.
ORIGINAL STORY 7/16/10 @ 2 p.m.
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Police are looking for an escapee in the woods along Interstate-64 near the Hal Greer exit in Huntington.
The escapee, in this case, is a 3-year old bull that was headed to the “butcher shop.”
According to the owner, Willis Mills, the bull jumped out of a trailer and ran into the woods. This was around mid-morning Friday.
For several hours, police and Mills have been searching the woods right below Huntington High.
Anyone seeing the bull is being urged to use caution. They believe the bull is scared and could be dangerous.
Mills has this advice for drivers in the area, “watch out for a cow crossing the road.”

Why are people upset that the bull was shot and killed? It was going to the slaughter house anyway...lol
All I have to say is WHY????????
And last time I checked, there is more than one way to put down a large animal...it's called a tranquilizer gun.
