Football Camp Offers Defense Against Crime
In football, running a gadget play can be an effective way to get things going your way, and one prosecutor used some creativity mixed with football as a way of keeping kids off the streets.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Bridging the gap between the community and law enforcement isn't always an easy task.

However, Kanawha County's prosecutor is hoping that a little football can do the trick.

Prosecutor Mark Plants is known for his stellar football career at West Virginia University in the mid 1990's.

Saturday, he used his knowledge and love of the game to try to inspire kids toward athletics and away from crime.

He held a camp at Laidley Field that was free of charge to kids of any age.

Along with going through drills and two-hand-touch games, the kids got to mix with local law enforcement officials in an attempt to build better relationships.

"We had a rotation where local law enforcement officials got to meet the kids, and the kids got to meet them to show police officers are the good guys,” Plants said. “They're not the bad guys."

Several of Plants' old teammates including Amos Zereoue and Grant Wiley helped with the camp, as well as former Mountaineer Coach Don Nehlen.

Nice sentiment, however it's right under the article about the Marshall player being arrested 4 times. Apparently athletes commit crimes.

Bill, was you at that camp yesterday? I am sure you was not. This camp was held to get kids into the game know the game and want to play the game so they arent out on the streets being a "young thug". This was a great experience for so many people. Unfortunately some of the children mine included cant afford to attend "The Hills" camp, or the Owen Schmidt camp. So for Mr. Plants to hold a camp and bring in memorable names from WVU and make it open to any child in Kanawha Valley free of charge, that says alot to me. He cares about the kids. He has seen what happens to kids who have to much free time on their hands. I am thankful as are so many other parents who have children, for the opportunity that was given to them. Thank you so much Mr.& Mrs. Plants, Mr. Nehlen, Mr. Zereoue, and all the other locals that helped. Great Job!
