UPDATE 7/22/10 @ 6:00 p.m.
CARTER COUNTY, Ky (WSAZ) -- It's a wait of the most excruciating kind -- one where family hopes and prays for the best, but fears and anticipates the worst. That's what the family of Mary Littleton is going through. The 71-year-old is still missing after her mobile home was swept away by floodwaters on Wednesday morning.
Crews are back out frantically searching.

The emotions ran the range today -- from guilt and despair to hope and faith.

“We have search dogs working the creek. If they hit on a spot, we go through the location and dig if there’s debris. We have two miles of creek to check before it goes to the Little Sandy River,” said Chief Greg Felty, Grayson Fire Dept.

Crews are hoping they find Mary Littleton before that happens.

“The Little Sandy River is 100 miles long. From here to Ohio is 80 miles so it would take a while to check all of that,” said Chief Felty.

Since Wednesday morning, the 72-year-old has made a long journey already. It started when her mobile home was swept off its foundation by floodwaters. It was washed downstream churning all the way until it paused at a bridge.

“She was just a hollerin’ and she said can you get my hand and that was it. It just blowed up,” said Tom Hall, Mary’s brother.

Mary is one of Tom’s twelve sisters and brothers.

“She was a good religious person. She served her lord. She was just a wonderful person, a nice person,” said Tom.

But, as the search continues, holding out hope is all they can do.

“We're treating her as a missing person until we get confirmation. I can't imagine what the family is going through and it's our job to provide answers,” said Trooper Elliott Gollihue, KY State Police.

“I would feel better if they’d bring her out of there,” said Tom.

Right now, cadaver dogs are searching the creek. The search is made up mostly of local volunteer firefighters. But, the worry is that they will soon have to go back to their other jobs.
