CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- The West Virginia Division of Highways is offering guidance to groups that want to host holiday safety breaks at the state's rest areas and welcome centers.

The DOH said Wednesday it has revised its safety break policy in response to an increasing number of requests to host such events. The policy details which groups are eligible and other requirements.

Safety breaks are designed to encourage holiday travelers to stop and take a break.

They are limited to the New Year's Day, Easter, Mother's Day, Memorial Day, Father's Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. But the DOH may allow safety breaks on days when traffic volume is extraordinarily high.
