UPDATE 7/29/10 @ 10 p.m.
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A major traffic headache for driver in Huntington has been repaired.

Crews completed repairs on a massive sinkhole at Fourth Avenue and Fifth Street Thursday evening. It opened up Monday night, closing Fourth Avenue and forcing drivers crossing the Robert C. Byrd Bridge into Huntington to detour onto Veterans Memorial Boulevard.

The sinkhole at one point measured 20 feed across and 20 feet deep.

UPDATE 7/29/10 @ 6 p.m.
HUNTINGTON, WVa. (WSAZ) -- An accelerant has been placed in the concrete on 4th Avenue at the base of the Robert C. Bryd Bridge. Crews with the city's Sanitation Board hope it'll lessen the time the road's closed.

4th Avenue has been shut down between 6th and 4th streets since the weekend of July 24th.

The road is expected to be reopened sometime after rush hour on Thursday, July 29th.

UPDATE 7/26/10
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A major sinkhole is causing problems for drivers in Huntington.

The hole is 20 feet square, 20 feet deep and has forced 4th Avenue to close from 6th Street to 4th Street.

The hole began sinking Friday and ended up causing major traffic issues while the city works to fix it. Sanitation workers say it was caused by a collapsed storm drain.

Wes Leek with the sanitation department says they hope to have it repaired by Thursday afternoon or sooner.

Traffic from the Robert Byrd Bridge is detoured as well.

UPDATE 7/26/10
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A large sinkhole was discovered Friday evening at the intersection of 4th Avenue and 5th Street, causing roadways in that area to be closed, according to a Huntington Police Department news release.

The sinkhole appeared to have undermined a large part of the roadway, which is located near the downtown Robert C. Byrd Bridge that crosses the Ohio River into Ohio.

Traffic entering the city from Ohio is being detoured off the bridge onto Veterans Memorial Boulevard. Traffic is being diverted off of 4th Avenue at 4th Street and 6th Street.

Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area if possible.

Roadways in the affected area could remain closed several days as repairs are made.

The project is fixed and the bridge is now open, great job City of Huntington. And for the imaginary pot hole in front of a persons house this would be a good time to inform WSAZ the address so WSAZ can take action in their investigative reporting...wouldn't you think? They have a great staff too!

It's funny they can find the money for things like this when it's a "need to" kind of thing! Or did they hire out?

i have the same thing on my road, instead of them fixing it they just blocked it off! i have called several times only to be told it's on the list..i am curious how long is this list? now the other side of my road is looking bad as well, ia m hoping they fix it soon before the onyl way to get home is by walking! it's a shame the city has let our roads get this bad, i think people wouldn't complain as much bout taxes if we could see our money being used to fix the streets.
