UPDATE 7/27/10 @ 6 p.m.
ST. ALBANS, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Meth is making a comeback in Kanawha County. During the past few years, there has been a decrease in the number of busts but this year the busts are on the rise.
"It seems likes the last two to three weeks like it's an everyday occurrence" Sgt. Michael Baylous with the West Virginia State Police says.
The problem seems to be centering on Kanawha County. In 2009, there were 28 meth lab busts in the unincorporated areas of the county. Already in 2010, there have been 27 meth labs found.
Police say they are not sure what has sparked the increase, but they say there may be several factors.
Many of the people who are being caught cooking meth have been in trouble before.
State police busted a meth lab Monday night along Middle Drive in St. Albans. They arrested a father and son, Robert and Thomas Sampson, and Kimberly Giffin. Police say Drew Holstein was also at the home but ran from police and got away.
Giffin was arrested earlier in July for having materials to make meth. Holstein was busted at an apartment in St. Albans back in February.
"Some of them are coming out of the prison systems and we are seeing a lot of repeat offenders," Baylous say. "And they're changing their methods a lot of times."
Baylous says another factor may be that the meth makers are finding ways to get around pseudoephedrine laws. When the law was passed in 2005, it helped curb the problem. But police say the cookers have found other ways to make meth.
"We don't know if they have found a way around the system to purchase more pseudoephedrine," Baylous says. "Because some of these labs involve more people."
If more people are buying pseudofed, they can each buy smaller amounts and not set off red flags.
Police say they are in turn changing the ways they investigate meth labs to try and keep up with the criminals.
Police also have been getting more tips from the public, which helps them find these labs. If you have a tip, you can call police or report it at www.WVCrime.com.
Recently, the problem has been in the St. Albans area. City police in St. Albans say they've also had a rise in meth lab busts.
In Kanawha County, houses are condemned after meth labs are found.
ORIGINAL STORY 7/27/10
ST. ALBANS, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A father and son are now behind bars after West Virginia State Police say they found a meth lab inside their home in St. Albans. A woman was also arrested who is no stranger to police.
Troopers say they found the makings for meth early Tuesday morning inside of Robert and Thomas Sampson's home on Middle Drive in St. Albans.
Thomas is 19-years-old, Robert is 40-years-old.
Kimberly Giffin was also inside the home. She was arrested on July 12 after police found a meth lab in her back pack. The meth making materials this time were found inside a book bag along with Giffin's court documents.
Police also found several guns inside the home. Thomas currently has a domestic violence protection order against him and is not allowed to have firearms.
Troopers also recovered a 4-wheeler which had been reported stolen out of South Charleston.
