HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A copper theft that netted a crook roughly $25 has left the Huntington Area Food Bank with more than $40,000 in damages.
"We're starting to get in panic mode," says Brooke Ash, the assistant director at the Huntington Area Food Bank. "There's devastation and the worry. We lost 7,000 pounds of food; that's enough to feed almost 500 families."
The vandalism happened last week. On Wednesday, the Huntington Young Professionals Committee donated $2,500 to help make necessary repairs. But that's far from the money needed to get two units up and running again.
The fear is the food bank may now have to turn away perishable donations because they won't have a place to store them because a few of the freezers aren't working. If that happens, it could snowball
and cause problems with food pantries it services in 17 counties.
"We depend on them for our cheese, our meats, that kind of thing," says Sherry Perry who helps run the ECCHO Food Pantry in Milton, W.Va. "If the food bank doesn't have a freezer to stock its supplies ... I have an empty freezer."
The food bank is looking for more donations and grant money to help make the necessary repairs. It's a clearing house that helps
feed 91,000 families in our region who need help putting food on the table.

these people don't care what they have to do to get the pills. if they quit making they pills, crime would go down quick. some of the best people i know have got on oxy's & have lost everything they owned, been in trouble with the law several times, spent time in jail, got out & done it again. you have to stop the source. the p-c at the scrap-yard are already tied into the police departments they know what is going on & don't do anything about it.
Well said, Peanut. Hold those buying the copper accountable. The average person doesn't have much access to copper. When someone shows up with much copper, law enforcement should be called. And I'll tell you what will really work to stop copper thefts. Life in prison for stealing over 8 oz. of copper. Life in prison with hard labor. Sounds tuff? Sure does. But I bet it would stop almost all copper thefts. When we get serious about stopping crime, we will stop it. But folks, what we are doing now is not working. Its not. You know its not. Our country, our society is falling apart because of illegal drugs and crime. Is this the type of future you want for you kids and grandkids? There is no better time to stop this than now. But its not for the weak hearted. We have got to drop to the level of the criminals and make the punishment much harsher than the crime. When we do this, we will have communities that a few of us can remember. Safe ones to raise our families in.
I agree with Peanut. Eliminate the money source, eliminate the problem.
