CPR: With or Without Mouth-to-Mouth? That's the Question
Any type of CPR, even simply doing chest compressions, is better than doing nothing.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Earl Ward is enjoying every second of life. That's because the grandfather of three nearly died last year after suffering a heart attack. However, Earl's brother, Tom, was there to step in.

"He heard a noise and looked around," Ward said. "He knew what was happening, and that I was having a heart attack."

Without missing a beat, Earl's brother quickly began giving him CPR.

"His immediate reaction, I'm sure, saved my life," Ward said. "In my opinion, if my brother wasn't here and did CPR and called 911,l I would not be alive today."

Luckily for Earl, he had a family member nearby. But according to a new study, most people are too worried about giving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, especially to a stranger. So, experts now say just doing chest compressions is better than not doing anything at all.

"If you're intimidated, not sure you remember ratios, or if your fearful of catching a disease because of mouth to mouth ventilations, just doing chest compressions is better than doing nothing," Cabell County Deputy Director of EMS Steve Murray said. "Especially in those first few minutes."

Murray says the recent changes to CPR guidelines should make it easy for anyone to help out in an emergency.

"Providing chest compressions, you want to provide 100 chest compressions for two solid minutes," Murray said. "Put your hands at the center of the breast bone, keep your elbows locked and provide good, quality chest compressions."

After his second chance at life, Ward says there's no doubt in his mind, everyone should know CPR.

"You don't have to be proficient at it," Ward said, "but having some knowledge of it could save someones live. And in my case, it saved my life."

I must say I doubt I would do mouth-to-mouth on someone I did not know. I would not risk my health and perhaps life in that manner.

Maddie is correct that is the way it's taught, however they are saying that compressions alone is almost as good as with breaths, if a person is intubated by a parmedic of course you'd bag them, if you are fortunate enough to be somewhere that has an AED USE IT!

These discussed 'changes' will be for the lay rescuer and not for healthcare providers as per my understanding. The AHA changes also have not been incorporated into the current classes at this point, but are coming in the near future.
