LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) -- Gov. Steve Beshear has ordered an immediate review of how the state handles reports of abuse and neglect of residents in Kentucky's nursing homes.

The review by the Cabinet for Health and Family Services comes after an investigation by the Lexington Herald-Leader found that only seven of 107 cases of nursing home deaths or abuse over a three-year period were prosecuted as crimes.

The Lexington newspaper reports that Beshear wants a review into how effectively the state coordinates efforts with local prosecutors and law enforcement when investigating abuse and neglect cases.

Vikki Franklin, a spokeswoman for the Health and Family Services Cabinet, says the review will be an opportunity to examine policies with an eye toward looking for potential improvement.

I have a little input that I would like to share. I have been trying to access information on a death of a resident of a nursing home in KY.I have written to the Cabinet for Health and Family Services Office of Inspector General in KY Which is the office that regulates nursing homes in KY and as of July 12 th,2010 they say that they may need as long as six months to provide those records. I am sure that they have more than one person that works for for that department, or are they working a person part time four hours a week. This to me sounds like some one is sand bagging. I have also read that the Bush administration made it almost impossible to get records from nursing home abuse cases. I believe an immediate review of how the state handles these cases should be forthcoming and some one be held accountable. I also believe this all boils down to politics and lobbing for nursing and personal care facilities. I guess that its nice to have money to spend on politicians to have laws made.
