HURRICANE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The old adage that charity begins at home has spread to Putnam County.
Hundreds of high school kids from all over the country have spent the last two weeks of their summer vacation improving the homes and lives of total strangers.
Surprisingly enough, they actually paid to do it.
Marian Michel's project was a last minute addition for the REACH work camp crew. The new wheelchair ramp might as well be a gift from heaven for her and her husband.
"My husband is not ambulatory," Michel said. "He's in the hospital right now, and this will be a tremendous help to him. He's gonna love it when he gets home. These guys have done a fantastic job. They're a great bunch of kids. They're very spiritual."
In fact, REACH is a Christian-based program. For the last two weeks, nearly 800 junior and high school age volunteers have worked on 75 construction projects.
All construction materials are bought locally, and the kids have stayed at Hurricane High School for eating, sleeping, showering and fellowship.
Each of the campers pays $400 for the week, with the money going toward materials for the work sites, according to Jeremy Duncan with REACH.
The organization already has scheduled another visit to West Virginia next June. They'll work in Kanawha County and stay at St. Albans High School.

Elishia Windfohr, what on earth are u talking about this has nothing to do with politics my gosh , this is a story of children trying to help people in need . So instead of trying to take the spotlight off them and put it on yourself u should be applauding these children for trying to become upstanding adults, which this country could realy use more of, and less people like u , trying to bash others and making everything about politics or yourself shame on you.
Its awesome to see there is still good people in this world and these are these children are our future!Way to go guys! Its good to see positive things in the media instead of all the violence!Keep up the good work and god bless!
Rangel is the poster child for everything that is wrong and corrupt in Congress - party has nothing to do with it - this is clear flat out lying and covering for each other on a grand scale and an insult to all Americans. Besides the outright corruption that nay of the rest of us would go to jail for we're paying these clowns something like $160K -to vote on bills they don't even read or understand, spend us into oblivion, and demand perks like private military jet trips with their families and friends to nice destinations like Copenhagen with us picking up the tab. This is the kind of thing that got Marie Antoinette into a lot of trouble!! Maybe we're not quite to that state but this is why every single member of congress needs to get booted in the next elections - no excuses - no rationalizations - no "I'm different" -BYE!!!
