UPDATE 8/01/10 @ 9:00 a.m.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Firefighters were able to rescue four young children after their home caught on fire early Sunday morning.
Charleston Fire Department Lt. Ken Tyree says it looks like the fire started on the porch of the three unit apartment building at 1527 Jackson Street.
"It's kind of odd for it to start outside, so we have to figure out why it started outside and go from there," said Lt. Tyree.
A man and another family living upstairs were able to make it out safely.
Heather Ross and John Moore lived in the basement with their four children and another relative that was staying with them.
"I was asleep and my cousin woke me up and told me my house was on fire," said Ross. "I called 911. I got out of the house and I couldn't get back in to get my kids. It was too smokey."
Firefighters made it into the basement and carried out a 3-year-old, 2-year-old, 1-year-old and a newborn.
Their father was at work when the fire started.
"They called and told me that I needed to come home, that my house was on fire and they couldn't get my kids out," said Moore. "If I could have flew, I would have."
The children and Heather's cousin, Chad, were taken to the hospital. They are all being treated for smoke inhalation.
"Thank God for every one of those firemen that got my babies out of that house," said Ross.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Charleston Fire Department. The State Fire Marshal's office has been notified.
Firefighters say there were not working smoke detectors in the apartment where the children were living.

What GOD actually said about judgement is: "Now, thou son of man, wilt thou judge, wilt thou judge the bloody city? yea, thou shalt show her all her abominations." (Ezek 22:2) Considered yourself judged.
|I know everyone has thier thoughts about the fire, but it was my son! My family, my home, my life,NO matter what anyone thinks, GOD KNOWS THE TRUTH, AND HE SAID: "JUDGE NOT LES YE BE JUDGED,|" SO ALOT OF PEOPLE POSTED ON THIS PAGE HAS A HIGHER POWER TO ANSWER TO! which one of you did GOD give permission to judge someone, she suffers enough without your sour comments, everyone says, " OH IF IT WERE ME!|" |Well coming from deep within my heart,as the father in this situation let's pray it's never you because I wouldn't wish this pain on my worst enemy!!! sincerely yours JOHN MOORE
Heather, if you need psychiatric help, GET IT. Stop destroying lives all around you. Have you even once considered that your illegal activities have caused 11 people to lose their home? We're all sorry about your son, but you've got to start admitting your faults in this. I only hope your other children have better lives in the future.
