BOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- It's hard to believe, but summer is officially over for some students in Kentucky. As the kids head back to the classrooms, it's crunch time for parents.
The Boyd County school district helps make it a little easier for parents trying to pinch pennies. This is the 17th year for the district's Readifest.
"It's just not cheap to buy school supplies anymore," says Dawna Adkins, who's a mother of five, said. "They want a lot for them."
Parents of students in the Boyd district line up hours before the doors officially open to Readifest because they say its a chance for them to get almost everything their children need to head back to the classroom -- for free.
"(This program) gives everybody a chance to get those new things and get that warm fuzzy feeling inside when they head back to school," says Kali Mattingly, a recent graduate of Boyd County High School. "And the families can feel really good, too. The parents feel like they are doing something great for their kids."
Leeann Johnson is a single mother of two in the district. She says her daughter is excited to start her first year in high school, but her son is going into middle school and he's scared to death.
Johnson says that's why making sure they are prepared for the first day of school is so important.

It would really be nice to have a program like this in Greenup County. Living on a fixed income and having three children, it isn't easy coming up with the money to buy the supplies reequired for Russell Primary.
we have already start school!!!=[
