KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A woman is in critical condition after a serious crash Thursday night.
West Virginia State Police say Diane Douin, 68, of Florida -- was driving on Interstate 77 near Sissonville when she crashed with one car, drove across the median and hit a tractor-trailer.
That area is no stranger to accidents.
"We've noticed, too, an increase in accidents in that area," WVDOT spokesperson Brent Walker said.
Since April, Kanawha County Sheriff's deputies have responded to 25 crashes with no injuries, three with injuries and one fatality. That one happened back in May.
"We want to take a look at how it happened; why it happened," Walker said.
Both of those accidents involved a car crossing over into oncoming traffic.
Now, transportation officials want to launch a study to see if action should be taken. The result could be placing cable barriers in the median.
"I think they're very affective," Walker said. "It's something that's being done more and more."
The barriers are said to prevent 98 percent of crossover accidents, but before they can be placed anywhere, that study must be done.
"Because of the amount of accidents we've seen there recently, it may well be already underway," Walker said.
The DOT often does studies in areas with high numbers of accidents. They involve looking at the details of each crash including speed, angles and other circumstances surrounding the accidents.
