Aging Program Calls for Community Help

PUTNAM COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A Putnam County organization that helps senior citizens now needs help of its own.

Directors of Putnam Aging say their goal is to provide services to seniors in the community that need them, but they need help meeting the demand.

They say they're short on in-home caregivers, and help wanted signs outside their building advertise the paid positions.

They're also losing money on their nutrition program, which they say many seniors depend on for meals.

"If families would be supportive of seniors who are eating, or if churches or other organizations can help to feed a senior by making a donation ... that's really what we need right now," executive director Joyce Arthur said.

Ruth Payne, a senior who lives in Winfield, says the organization has made a huge difference in her life. She said it made it possible for her to keep being self-sufficient.

"They've been a big help to me since I have neuropathy, which affects the nerves," Payne said. "I also have diabetes and a pacemaker."

Payne says her caregiver visits her often and helps her complete light housework that would be tough to handle on her own. She says she recommends the program to any other senior in her position.

"That way they can live alone," she said. "So they don't have to go to a nursing home."

For more information about applying for a caregiver position, call Putnam Aging at 304-755-2385.
