NEW INFO: Elvis Kerns Pleads Guilty to Wheelersburg Bank Robbery

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (WSAZ) -- The Wheelersburg man arrested in Texas for a Scioto County bank robbery has agreed to a plea deal that sends him to prison for six years.

Prosecutors say Elvis Kerns, 34, robbed the Charter One Bank branch in Wheelersburg on April 5.

In June, a Scioto County Grand Jury indicted Kerns on two counts of robbery, one count of obstructing official business and one count of possession of criminal tools.

The Scioto County Prosecutor's Office tells WSAZ.com that in a surprise move, Kerns pleaded guilty to one count of felony robbery on Friday. He was then sentenced to the six years in prison.

Kerns trial for the bank robbery was supposed to start Monday in Scioto County Common Pleas Court.

Investigators in Lawrence County, Ohio, say Kern is also responsible for a bank robbery there. The U.S. Bank branch on County Road 107 in Proctorville was held up on April 8.

That case is still pending.

Kerns was arrested in Seguin, Texas back on April 24.

Kerns is no stranger to the legal system.

Back in 2004, he was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in connection with the stabbing death of Carleton Cave Jr.

Kerns was sentenced to nine years in prison. He was released on December 3, 2012.

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (WSAZ) -- The Wheelersburg man arrested in Texas for a Scioto County bank robbery has been indicted by a grand jury for that robbery.

The Scioto County Sheriff says that Elvis Kerns, 34, robbed the Charter One Bank branch in Wheelersburg on April 5.

On June 6, a Scioto County Grand Jury indicted Kenrs on two counts of robbery, one count of obstructing official business and on count of possession of criminal tools. His arraignment is set for June 26.

Investigators in Lawrence County, Ohio say Kern is responsible for a bank robbery there also. The U.S. Bank branch on County Road 107 in Proctorville was held up on April 8.

Kerns was arrested in Seguin, Texas. April 24.



UPDATE 4/25/13
PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (WSAZ) -- The Scioto County Sheriff's Department is awaiting news from Texas on when the prime suspect in a local bank robbery is heading back to town.

Elvis Presley Kerns, of Wheelersburg, is wanted for two robberies in southern Ohio.

"We thought we'd see another one before he got caught," Captain David Hall said. "But details shared on the Homeland Security Network have been invaluable in catching him."

The Scioto County Sheriff's Department got a tip that Kerns was at a family members home in Seguin, Texas. The department notified the local police department and sent photos of Kerns, along with detailed photos of body tattoos.

"He wouldn't open the door, so they forcibly went in with canines," Hall said. "He wouldn't confirm he was Elvis when they went the residence, but they knew because of the tattoo pictures we sent them."

Kerns is expected with waive extradition, on Friday, to be brought back to southern Ohio.

UPDATE 4/24/13 @ 5:50 p.m.SCIOTO COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- The man that investigators say is responsible for recent bank robberies in Scioto and Lawrence Counties has been captured in Texas.

The Scioto County Sheriff's Office says Elvis Kerns, 34, of Wheelersburg, was arrested shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday in Seguin, Texas.

Captain David Hall tells WSAZ.com that detectives received information that Kerns was in Seguin and contacted police there.

Hall say detectives with the Seguin Police Department then began surveillance on a home they believed Kerns was staying. According to Hall, those detectives saw Kerns coming and going from the home -- and then took him into custody.

Kerns is being held without bond and will be extradited back to Ohio on charges of Aggravated Robbery and Parole Violation.

Sheriff Marty Donini says more charges will be presented to a Scioto County Grand Jury at a later date.

The Charter One Bank branch on Ohio River Road in Scioto County was robbed on April 5 and the U.S. Bank branch on County Road 107 in Proctorville was robbed about 12:25 p.m. April 8.

Seguin is about 40 miles southeast of San Antonio.

LAWRENCE COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- The man deputies believe robbed a bank in Wheelersburg is now the suspect in a Proctorville bank robbery.

According to a news release from Lawrence County Sheriff Jeff Lawless, investigators from Lawrence County have been working with investigators from Scioto County and have named Elvis Kerns, 34, of Wheelersburg, the suspect in two recent robberies.

The Charter One Bank branch on Ohio River Road was robbed last Friday and the U.S. Bank branch on County Road 107 in Proctorville was robbed about 12:25 p.m. Monday.

Kerns was last seen driving a 1990 gold Chevy Cavalier with Ohio plates FTK-1183. Kerns is about 5-feet 11-inches tall, brown hair and blue eyes. The car has tinted windows that are bubbled all over and a support coal miners sticker on the rear window.

Sheriff Lawless tells WSAZ.com that his staff worked with the Scioto County Sheriff's Office to exchange information on the robberies and determined that they are connected.

Kerns is no stranger to the legal system.

Back in 2004, Kerns was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in connection with the stabbing death of Carleton Cave Jr. Kern's trial lasted three days, and ended with him being sentenced to nine years in prison.

Kerns was released from prison on December 3, 2012.

Investigators believe that Kerns is still in the area, and recently tracked him into the Cross Lanes and Huntington areas.

PORSMOUTH, Ohio (WSAZ) -- The Scioto County Sheriff says a man from Wheelersburg is responsible for last weeks bank robbery in Wheelersburg.

The Charter One Bank branch on Ohio River Road was robbed last Friday.

Sheriff Marty Donini says the suspect is Elvis P Kerns, 34, of Wheelersburg. Kerns was last seen in Cross Lanes, W.Va. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Kerns is believed to be driving a 1990 gold, Chevy Cavalier with Ohio license, FTK1183.

The car has a sticker in the back window that supports coal miners. It also has tinted windows that are bubbled all over.

Kerns was just released from prison in December on unrelated charges.

PROCTORVILLE, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Lawrence County Ohio Sheriff Jeff Lawless says bank robberies in Lawrence and Scioto County could be connected.

The U.S. Bank branch on County Road 107 in Proctorville was robbed about 12:25 p.m. Monday.

The Charter One bank branch in Wheelersburg was held up on Friday afternoon.

Sheriff Lawless says investigators are checking surveillance video from U.S. Bank and neighboring businesses to try to identify the suspect.

Lawless tells WSAZ.com that his staff has been working with the Scioto County Sheriff's Office and exchanging information on the robberies to determine if they are connected.

During Monday's robbery, Lawless says that the man tried to cash a check and where the clerk noticed some discrepancies and wouldn't cash it, he demanded all the money the tell had.

The man got away with money and ran from the bank.

Lawless says the man did not show a weapon.

No one was hurt during the robbery.

PROCTORVILLE, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Deputies are searching for a man who held up a Lawrence County, Ohio bank Monday afternoon.

Sheriff Jeff Lawless tells WSAZ.com the U.S. Bank branch on County Road 107 in Proctorville was robbed about 12:25 p.m.

Lawless says the man tried to cash a check and there were some discrepancies with the check. He says the teller refused to cash it and the suspect demanded the teller give him all the money she had.

He then took off on foot and ran west. Sheriff Lawless says the man kept his hands in his pockets and never showed a weapon.

He got away with an undetermined amount of cash

The suspect is 5-feet 9-inches tall, with a skinny build, short brown hair and a mustache.

He was wearing sunglasses, a ball cap and a dark-colored pullover.

There were three employees in the bank at the time, but no customers.

The FBI has been called in to help investigate.

WHEELERSBURG, Ohio (WSAZ) -- The Scioto County Sheriff's Office is searching for a man they say robbed a bank in Wheelersburg.

According to a news release from Scioto County Sheriff Marty Donini, the Charter One Bank along Ohio River Road in Wheelersburg was robbed about noon Friday.

Deputies are searching for a medium build man with dark hair and a goatee. According to the release, the man was wearing blue jeans, a green/tan camo jacket, a light off white/tan safari hat and dark sunglasses.

According to the release, the man walked up to the teller and had a brief conversation about wanting to cash a check. The man then showed a note and demanded money and told the teller to not talk.

The suspect was given an undetermined amount of money and then took off on foot, headed east away from the bank.

According to the release, the man never displayed a firearm during the robbery.

No one was injured during the robbery.

WHEELERSBURG, Ohio (WSAZ) -- The Scioto County Sheriff's Office is investigating a bank robbery that happened Friday afternoon.

Chief Deputy Todd Miller tells WSAZ.com that the Charter One Bank branch in Wheelersburg was robbed around noon.

Miller says the man passed a note to a teller saying he wanted cash.

He got the money and then ran east toward McDonald's.

Miller says he did not show a weapon during the robbery.

The man was wearing a brown camo jacket, jeans, and a floppy khaki hat with strings, like a safari hat. Miller says he had a reddish-brown goatee.

Investigators are checking surveillance video from the bank and from McDonald's.

The bank is closed at this hour. No word if it will reopen Friday afternoon.
