UPDATE 2/15/13 @ 8:05 p.m.
PUTNAM COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A deadly car accident Friday morning has neighbors asking for help.

Jeffrey Bowers, 48, of Red House, W.Va., was killed Friday morning along Grandview Ridge Road in Confidence. Deputies say he lost control of his car and went over a hill. Bowers was pronounced dead on the scene.

Melissa Lewis lives beside the scene of the accident and said for years she has been asking for a guardrail on the road.

“I'm praying that after what happened to the gentlemen this morning,” Lewis said, “they really take a serious look about putting a guardrail up there.”

Neighbors like Curtis Brian Sheltz agreed. Sheltz said he drives along Grandview Ridge Road daily. He said with the road’s many twists and turns, it can be dangerous.

“We knew it was going to happen, sooner or later,” Sheltz said.

The West Virginia Department of Transportation said a guardrail in that location is unlikely. The agency uses crash data of the top five percentage crash sites to determine where to install guardrails. The area along Grandview Ridge Road doesn’t meet the criteria.

West Virginia DOT spokesman Brent Walker said, “There are a lot of areas that folks think could use a guard rail, and what we have to rely on is crash data, and we just don't see that in that area.”
