UPDATE 7/21/2012@ 11:12 p.m.

ROANE COUNTY, W. Va. (WSAZ) -- Four lives were gone in an instant Saturday afternoon after a tragic accident on Interstate 79 claimed them.

State police say two teenage males were driving in the northbound lanes about 5 p.m. when they crossed the grass median and hit another vehicle head-on.

They say that vehicle was a Volkswagen Jetta that had two other men inside. All four people were killed on impact.

"It's pretty bad...something you hate to see," state trooper Eric Workman said. "Four people died today and two of them were very young. That's what makes it even worse."

The accident happened at mile marker 32 near Big Otter. It held up southbound traffic for a half-mile. Police steered oncoming cars onto a detour.

Investigators say they've seen the roads get busier recently thanks to the end of the stormy spell.

"There's a lot of traffic right now wih all the power outages we've had," said Chuck Runyon, emergency operations manager with the West Virginia Department of Transportation. "Now people are getting their power back and going on vacation."

Runyon says that makes it an important time to stay alert behind the wheel.

"A lot of people are traveling because of the weather right now," he said. "So they really need to focus on the road and watch out for the other guy and be safe."

Police aren't releasing the victims' identities until their families are notified. They believe the two teenage males were from Maryland and the two other men were from Pennsylvania.

All lanes of I-79 have been re-opened.
