UPDATE 1/15/13 @ 11:30 p.m.
HAZARD, Ky. (WSAZ) -- The shooting that killed two people and seriously injured a teenage girl Tuesday evening appears to have started from a domestic situation that found its way to a community college parking lot, authorities say.

Hazard Police say the victims who died are Caitlin Cornett, 20, and Jackie Cornett, 53. The victim who was injured is a 17-year-old girl, who was not identified. Police say she was taken to the University of Kentucky Medical Center.

Police say the shooting suspect is Dalton Stidham, 21. Officers say Stidham used a semi-automatic pistol in the shooting, which happened on a parking lot at Hazard Community and Technical College.

Conor Duff, the college's evening coordinator, said the shootings happened about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the campus -- located about 90 miles southeast of Lexington.

Duff said police then went through the school's two buildings to ensure no one else was at risk.

During a news conference, college President Steve Griner told reporters that all activities and classes at the college have been canceled for Wednesday so investigators can work on the case.

The college released the following statement:

“Our thoughts and sympathy are with the families of the victims of this tragedy,” HCTC President Steve Greiner said. “We are cooperating fully with the authorities and they have shared with us they do not believe the college was specifically targeted. Fortunately our staff was prepared and responded quickly to secure our campus buildings to limit the impact of this shooting. I am pleased with their response and I want to assure our students, staff and the community we will do all we can to maintain the safety and security of our college.”
