UPDATE: Bank Robbery Suspects Arraigned

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Three people accused of working together to rob a Charleston bank were in court Tuesday morning.

Stephen Spires, 61, of Jacksonville, Florida, is accused of robbing the Chase Bank on Washington Street East in Charleston around 2 p.m. Monday.

Charleston Police say Spires handed a note to the teller demanding money, left with the cash and got into a car with Bernice White, 61, and Sandra Mullins, 39, both of Williamson.

All three are charged with bank robbery and were arraigned Tuesday morning in magistrate court in Kanawha County.

Police say the three were working together and that Spires agreed to give the women some of the stolen money.

The three were caught by West Virginia State Police on Airport Road in Chapmanville about an hour after the robbery.

According to police, the trio met about a month ago at a bar in Williamson.

They are scheduled to be back in court for a preliminary hearing November 7th.

They are all being held on $100,000 bond.

CHAPMANVILLE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The names of the people police believe are responsible for a bank robbery in Charleston Monday afternoon have been released.

Stephen Spires, 61, originally from Jacksonville, Florida, is expected to be charged with carrying out the robbery.

Bernice White, 61, of Williamson, and Sandra Mullins, 39, of Williamson, are charged with accessory to bank robbery.

On Monday, police say Spires handed the teller a note at the Chase Bank on Washington Street East demanding cash.

After leaving with an undisclosed amount of money, investigators say Spires jumped a fence and ran across a few parking lots before getting in the car with Mullins and White.

West Virginia State Police tracked down the suspects' vehicle in Logan near Corridor G and Airport Road.

According to police, the trio met about a month ago at a bar in Williamson. They say the two women didn't know Spires was planning to rob a bank. They told police Spires said he needed a ride to Charleston and that they didn't find out about the robbery until he got into the car with the money.

"They met at a local bar in Williamson, West Virginia. One of the females actually didn't know the guy's real name," said Sergeant Tony Hazelett of the Charleston Police Department. "They knew him by a nickname, that nickname being Chief."

Both White and Mullins became accomplices when they agreed to drive him away from the scene in exchange for a cut of the money.

All three were arrested about 90 minutes later in Chapmanville and taken to the Southwestern Regional Jail in Holden.

They will be arraigned Tuesday morning in Logan County.

CHAPMANVILLE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Two women and one man are in custody after a bank robbery Monday afternoon.

The robbery happened at the Chase Bank on Washington Street East in Charleston about 2 p.m. Monday.

Charleston Police say a man handed the teller a note, demanded money and then got away.

Three people were taken into custody about an hour and a half later in Chapmanville. West Virginia State Police say the three were caught on Airport Road in Chapmanville.

At this time, we know there are two women and one man being questioned.

Their names and charges have not been released.

We have a crew at the scene.

Charleston Police tell WSAZ.com a man walked into the Chase Bank on Washington Street East in Charleston about 2 p.m. Monday.

The man handed the teller a note, demanded money and then got away.

No names have been released just yet.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Police are on the scene of a robbery at the Chase Bank on Washington Street East in Charleston.

It happened just before 2 p.m. Monday.

Police tell WSAZ.com, the man walked into the bank, handed the teller a note that demanded money.

Dispatchers say the man acted like he had a weapon, but never showed one.

No one has was hurt, but police say there were a few customers in the bank when the robbery happened.

The suspect was able to get some cash and ran away.

No arrests have been made just yet but police say they do have some leads in the case.
