ATHENS COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Drivers in Athens County were doing a double-take as an impromptu bullfight unfolded before them.
Ohio State Highway Patrol says a bull being hauled in a trailer near Guysville broke the latch and ran loose on U.S. 50 a little before 3 p.m. Saturday.
Bryce Ashcraft was driving through after the bull had escaped. He says it was alarmingly feisty and aggressive.
"It was kicking cars, trying to knock people over," Ashcraft said. “It pushed the highway fence over, kicked my buddy's truck tailgate, kicked a couple other cars."
Highway Patrol says after more than an hour of trying to capture the bull and keep it away from traffic, the owner asked them to just put the bull down.
The bull then prepared to charge a trooper. That's when it was fatally shot.
The owner is from Nelsonville. He says he'd just purchased the bull in Guysville about 20 minutes before it broke loose.
