UPDATE 3/21/2013@11:05 p.m.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Capital High School Principal Clinton Giles has been suspended after nine years on the job.
Kanawha County Board of Education members confirmed that Giles' suspension started Wednesday. They say the move was a personnel matter and declined to provide a reason for the decision.
But the suspension has plenty of parents and community members voicing their opinions.
"I know people who have had difficulty with him because he sometimes makes very challenging rules," a parent said. "It almost seems like the rules are there because he has a certain agenda."
Several viewers wrote to WSAZ.com in defense of Giles.
"He is the most intelligent, eloquent, and well-educated man I know," Brian Mayhew wrote. "It's an honor and a privilege to work with Mr. Giles."
Giles has been the source of talk several times in the past year - once in December for canceling the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem for a day.
Giles said it was a reaction to student complaints about being forced to recite the pledge.
Giles also tried to prevent students from walking at graduation for wearing controversial T-shirts, but the school board later overruled the decision.
Giles told WSAZ.com he didn't have any comment on the suspension.
Sources tell WSAZ.com Giles' suspension started Wednesday.
There is no word on how long Giles will be off the job.
We have calls into Superintendent Ron Deurring's office, but they have not been returned.
