Carter County School Shooter Accused of Prison Assault

EDDYVILLE, Ky. (WSAZ) -- The Carter County man serving a life sentence for a deadly shooting at East Carter High School, now faces additional criminal charges following a reported assault at the prison where he is an inmate.

According to several media reports, Gary Scott Pennington, 38, was placed in segregation following the incident on Saturday, where a contract food service employee was seriously assaulted.

The female employee was taken to a local hospital where she was treated and released on Monday.

On January 18, 1993, Pennington, then a 17-year-old student at East Carter High School, walked into an English classroom and shot and killed teacher Deanna McDavid and custodian Marvin Hicks. He also held fellow students hostage for about 15 minutes before surrendering to police.

He was later sentenced to life in prison without the possibly of parole for 25 years for the murders.

Kentucky State Police are in charge of the criminal investigation involving the reported assault. Pennington could face both internal and external charges.
