Charleston Man Pleads Guilty to Cocaine Charge
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A Charleston man has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute cocaine, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s office.
Richard Lamar Banks, 33, admitted Thursday that from February 2012 to March 1, 2012, he conspired with a known associate to distribute cocaine in and around the Charleston area.
Banks admitted that he provided an associate with 10 ounces of cocaine for distribution and expected repayment once the cocaine was sold. Banks admitted that he provided cocaine on two different occasions. Banks further admitted that on March 6, 2012, he met his associate to collect repayment for 10 ounces of cocaine.
The defendant’s associate, who was acting as a confidential source for the Metropolitan Drug Enforcement Network Team (MDENT), provided Banks with $10,500 in prerecorded currency to complete the transaction.
Following the transaction between Banks and his associate, law enforcement officers apprehended the defendant and recovered the bag of currency that the defendant had placed under a rock near the railroad truss bridge in the 1300 block of Central Avenue in Charleston.
Banks faces up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine when he is sentenced Nov. 7 by U.S. District Judge John T. Copenhaver Jr.
