UPDATE: Students, Staff Mourn Death of 12-Year-Old

PIKE COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Staff and students at Johns Creek Elementary in Pike County, Ky., are mourning the loss of a student.

Deputy Pike County Coroner Zeb Hampton tells WSAZ.com that Shelby LaRae Damron was killed Sunday.

Kentucky State Police say she was riding an ATV with her 16-year-old sister and they crashed into a tree. The accident happened on Caney Creek Road in the Johns Creek area.

Hampton says that Shelby was a passenger on the ATV.

Shelby was pronounced dead at the scene. The 16-year-old was taken to a local hospital. No word on her condition.

Monday at Johns Creek Elementary, teachers and counselors spent the day helping students understand and cope with the loss.

Shelby's favorite color was blue, so everyone wore blue in her honor Monday.

The students also decorated a bulletin board for her, with pictures to remember her smile, and notes to describe how much she will be missed.

The faculty described her as an exceptional students, who always wore and a smile, and who everyone loved.

"She was involved in almost every activity we have here. One of our most intelligent students and one of our student with just a tremendously bright future," Johns Creek Principal Kenneth Adkins said.

Administrators say they will take as much time as they need to help the students through the grieving process.

PIKE COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- A 12-year-old girl was killed in that ATV crash in Pike County, Ky. Sunday.

The accident happened along Caney Creek Road in the Johns Creek area about 4 p.m. Sunday.

Deputy Pike County Coroner Zeb Hampton tells WSAZ.com that Shelby LaRae Damron was killed. Hampton says she was a passenger on the ATV operated by her 16-year-old sister.

Kentucky State Police say ATV went off the right side of the road; the operator then over corrected and went back across the road before hitting a tree and overturning.

Shelby Damron died at the scene. Her sister was hurt and taken to a local hospital.

PIKE COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- A young person is dead and another is in the hospital following an ATV crash in Pike County, Ky..

Kentucky State Police tell WSAZ.com, it happened along Caney Creek Road in Pikeville about 4 p.m. Sunday.

Troopers say the ATV went off the right side of the road, the operator then overcorrected and went back across the road before hitting a tree and overturning.

The juvenile passenger died at the scene. The driver, also a juvenile was taken to the hospital.

No ages or names have been released.
