UPDATE: Community Garden Set to Open on Charleston's East End

UPDATE 3/14/12 @ 12:30 p.m.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - A community garden will open this spring on the east end of Charleston.

During the Charleston Urban Renewal Meeting Wednesday, members approved a plan to lease the property at 1543 Washington Street east to use for the garden.

The East End Community Association has secured grant money to pay for the expenses.

The association will lease out 10 to 12 4X4 plots at $25 dollars a year for residents in the area.

Organizers say they want people in the community to have a place where they can plant crops and gardens in the spring and summer months.

ORIGINAL STORY
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A community garden could be coming to the east end of Charleston.

During the Charleston Urban Renewal Meeting Wednesday, members talked about the land the East End Community Association is hoping to lease to use for the garden.

The association is trying to secure grant money to lease the property at 1543 Washington Street east.

That's where people living in the community can plant crops and use them throughout the summer months.

Meanwhile, a plan to build a media studies center in Charleston for West Virginia State University is on hold.

WVSU wanted to build the center on a piece of property in downtown, but due to the university's financial situation the school has decided to put the project on hold.

CURA plans to meet with WVSU to come up with an alternative plan for the project.

However, another project to revitalize Chamberlain Court in Charleston could be moving forward. The West Virginia Historical Society is looking to get involved to help restore the abandoned apartment complex.

CURA board members announced during the meeting Wednesday that they may try to apply for more grant money that would become available in early fall of 2013.
