Copper Thefts a Major Nuisance for Huntington Businesses

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Copper thefts are keeping a business in Huntington from opening its doors.

Joel Goldy owns Goldy Auto in Kinetic Park.

He says copper thieves have struck their building, which is under construction, twice in the past week.

"Every time they do it, it sets you back a few weeks,” Goldy said, “Because you have to reorder everything and wait for it to come in, then redo all the work they've already done."

Cindy Null’s family operates several businesses out of a building on West 14th Street and Washington Avenue.

She says they’ve been struck by copper thieves six times in the past year.

The latest break-in came early Thursday morning. Null says the thieves caused thousands of dollars worth of damage.

"I try to rent part of the building out,” Null said. “What these people have done is, part of the building is going to be almost impossible to try to renovate."

Null had installed a new security system. She says when the alarm went off, it scared the thieves off before they could get away with what they were trying to steal. However, she says that's little consolation with the damage left behind.

Null says they've sent surveillance video back to their security company to see what it captured.

Huntington police are investigating.
