CHARLESTON, W. Va. (WSAZ) – It’s mission accomplished for search crews with the Cedar Grove Volunteer Fire Department who found 58-year-old Jerry Withrow alive and well near Kelly Creek Road just before Noon on Sunday.
"When we found him we was coming up a hill and just happened to see him walking out the road and we stopped and offered him water and he was walking, looked a little weak, but had a couple bumps and bruises on him but seemed like he was in good shape and we loaded him up in one of our firefighter’s 4-wheelers and took him to our medics unit in Kelly's Creek," said Cedar Grove Volunteer Fire Department chief Michael Coleman.
Withrow disappeared Friday, prompting a coordinated search from the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department, the Cedar Grove and Malden Fire Departments and the West Virginia State Police.
"It worked out real well just like it's supposed to. We found the guy so worked out real well," said chief Coleman.
Trekking through miles of woods is difficult enough, but add in the extreme heat, and rescue crews said it could have ended much differently.
"It was over 100 degrees up here yesterday so I would say that fellow's very lucky right now," said chief Coleman.
