ONA, W.Va.(WSAZ) -- Cabell-Midland High School junior Spencer White never had a clue.
His dad, Chief Petty Officer Gerome White, hid under the bleachers while his son was receiving a spirit award in Cabell-Midland's jam-packed gym.
Out of nowhere, pop ran through the crowd and hugged Spencer from behind.
When Spencer turned around, he and the whole gymnasium exploded -- fans cheered while Spencer teared up in a long, strong greeting from his dad.
"I'm just so proud of him," Gerome said of his son. "He was the only man in the house since last April."
Spencer was a bit overcome but Dad conveyed enough meaning.
"I've had multiple deployments to Afghanistan, and he was just as strong during those times, too," Gerome said.
He says he's done with Afghanistan and has two years left to serve in the Naval Reserves. Then he retires -- assured, they're all counting the days.
