Preparing for Disaster in School

BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A worst case practice scenario played out Friday night at a school in Barboursville so police could make sure a plan is in place if the real thing were to hit home.

West Virginia State Police put on the training exercise at Davis Creek Elementary.

They say sadly the mentality is no longer preparing for if this happens, but when.

"It's not just a national problem,” West Virginia State Police Sgt. Greg Losh said. “It's not something that's happening far away. It can happen here. It can happen in this county. I want the people to know that law enforcement is preparing."

About 40 members of law enforcement from Cabell, Wayne and Putnam counties got together for the mock shooting drill, working not only on tactics, but preparing for the stress and emotions.

"It's always better to be prepared and have some stress, see these situations beforehand instead of showing up one day when it actually happens and have no idea what to do," Barboursville Police Chief Mike Coffey said.

Losh says they'd like to have similar exercises at other schools in the area, as well as other busy public places like the Huntington Mall.
