KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va (WSAZ) --Caution signs blazed across the West Virginia Turnpike Saturday night, urging drivers to take their time battling the fierce weather and slippery roads.

The stretch in Kanawha County saw many folks just trying to get by in the winter mess.

"It's really windy and snowy...slow-going for sure," driver Mark Chen-Keenan said.

As road crews did their best to shove and melt the slush away,. drivers had to compensate by treading lightly.

"It's risk definitely when you see something like that and you know you're driving into it," Eric Melvin said.

Melvin and his friends were coming from Beckley after spending the day at Winterplace Ski Resort. He says enjoying what the snow has to offer and weighing the risks of driving in it is a big balancing act.

"We figured we would encounter some bad weather," he said. "And we talked about staying in Beckley if we had to. But we figured it would be decent enough to drive in."

Chen-Keenan says caution is always the best policy in times like these.

"Don't take any chances you're not willing to take," he said. "You know, there's always tomorrow."
