Eastbound Lanes of I-64 Reopen in South Charleston after Accident

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The eastbound lanes of Interstate 64 in South Charleston have reopened after a motorcycle accident that seriously injured two people.

The accident happened about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday just past the Montrose exit.

Emergency crews at the scene tell WSAZ.com the motorcycle was traveling east when it rear-ended a white pickup truck. The man and woman on the bike were wearing skull-like helmets, but they did not have full protection.

Both people on the bike suffered serious head injuries and were taken to the hospital.

The eastbound lanes were closed for nearly three hours before crews were able to reopen the road about 12 p.m. Wednesday. During that time, traffic was backed up for miles.

A reconstruction team responded to the accident to determine the cause.

Witnesses tell WSAZ.com traffic was moving slow in the area just before the accident because road crews were in the process of shutting down a lane of traffic. That's when the motorcycle rear-ended a truck.

The accident happened about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday just past the Montrose exit.

Emergency crews at the scene tell WSAZ.com the motorcycle was traveling east when it rear-ended a white pickup truck. The man and woman on the bike were wearing skull-like helmets, but they did not have full protection.

Right now, the eastbound lanes are closed just past the Montrose Drive exit. However, crews are allowing drivers to drive in both emergency shoulders to get around the accident.

Dunbar and South Charleston Police are also diverting traffic off the interstate onto MacCorkle Avenue.

A reconstruction team is on the scene trying to figure out what caused the accident.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Traffic along Interstate 64 in South Charleston is backed up after an accident closed the eastbound lanes.

Right now, eastbound traffic is being diverted off the Montrose Drive exit onto Route 60. Drivers can either take Patrick Street or Oakwood Road to get around the accident.

The accident happened about 9:30 a.m. just past the Montrose exit.

Kanawha County 911 Dispatchers tell WSAZ.com a vehicle and a motorcycle were involved in the accident. Two people are hurt. No word on the extent of their injuries.

Witnesses tell WSAZ.com traffic was moving slow in the area just before the accident because road crews were in the process of shutting down a lane of traffic. That's when the motorcycle rear-ended a truck.

Emergency crews are allowing drivers who are stuck behind the accident to drive in the emergency shoulder to get around the scene.
